Information for new members You may have heard of Rotary International consisting of PROfessional and BUSinessmen and women hence the name PROBUS. Rotarians worldwide wondered how to keep the social contact going once they retired hence there are Probus Clubs in most towns and they form a social meeting point for retirees. Clubs tend to have about 50 members so that you can get to know each other and our near neighbours at Taunton have 4 Probus Clubs. They are popular because they are self driven through their own elected committees. Our meetings last a couple of hours on a Tuesday morning once a month so you turn up for a cup of coffee and chat and then we have a Speaker usually accompanied by a slide show and we are invariably impressed by the standard of presentation. That takes up the first hour. We then discuss our own club affairs and have a Draw plus a few anecdotes and reports from the committee after which we are homeward bound by midday. That takes place on the first Tuesday of the month whilst on the second Wednesday of the month usually about 10 members meet up for a lunch at a local hostelry of their choice. The question at the end of each meal is "where shall we go next month"? Our annual subscription at present is £20 as we have to pay a rental for the Hall and pay our Speaker's fees. In addition we have a voluntary £1 a ticket, monthly draw which pays out 3 worthwhile prizes and the rest goes to topping up the Speaker's Fund. There are two or three meetings each year when our wives or partners come and join us and we have 2 or 3 days out each year and an end of year seasonal lunch as Christmas approaches. If you would like to come along for a couple of meetings to try things out for yourself then get in touch with the Hon. Secretary as explained on the introductory page. Alternatively if you look at the Member's photographs there may be someone you know and you could always have a word with them and come along to a meeting. You will always be most welcome. |
